The Effect Of Statistics On The Quality Of Decision Making

Decision making in our daily lives should be based not only on experience and intuition, but also on data. Drawing meaningful conclusions from these data and using these findings as input for decision requires knowledge of statistics. Statistics is testing the theoretical model based on certain assumptions with data and making predictions using the model adopted as a result ofthis test. İn short, it is a tool to reduce uncertainty about the future and risk in decision-making by making use of past data.

Although statistical information is important, it is also open to misinterpretation when not well understood. The fact that decision-makers in many professions, such as doctors who diagnose their patients everyday, judges who try to make fair decisions in courts and managers who decide on the use of resources in their compnies, don't receive sufficient statistical training negatively affects the quality of their decisions.

The most important mistakes in statistics arise from sampling errors made while collecting data. For example, if sampling is done based on customer lists in a study conducted to determine the advantages and disadvantages of a product aganst competitors, the opinion of the market won't be accurately reflected since the opinions of those who have chosen competing products are not taken.
Statistics science in our lives; we use it in fields such as genetics, biology, agriculture, medicine, pharmaceutical production, public health, enviromental sciences, economics, finance, education. psychology, sociology, marketing, sports and engineering. Since these areas cover a large part of our lives, our decision in these areas have a great impact on ourselves, our lives and our social life. Statistical science increases the scope of decision. There are several main reasons, including data-driven decision making, reducing risk and uncertainty, objectivity, understanding patterns and trends, evaluation of alternatives, quality control and process improvement. Statistics frees decisions from personal biases and ensures that decisions are made on a generated basic rather than randomly. Statistical analysis is also used to reduce and minimize uncertainty.

As a result, statistical science significantly increases the quality of decision-making with its ability to systematically analyze and interpret data.
